Who is not recommended for manual lymphatic drainage?

Even though manual lymphatic drainage can have enormous benefits, there are some cases in which it is strictly forbidden:

  • Carcinogenic processes and malignant diseases
Why do We need to manually move the lymph system?
Basically, because of sedentary lifestyle we do not move our bodies enough to make this system work at maximum efficiency. Lymph system does not have a pump like the circulatory system has a heart and that is the reason why we need to encourage it to move, to get filtered through the body and out, taking with it harmful toxins. The waste products are released from the body with increased urination.
Why does manual lymphatic drainage help pre-and after-surgery?

MLD is an effective treatment both before and after surgery which helps speed up the healing process.

As a pre-surgery treatment, MLD prepares the lymphatic system for surgery by ensuring that the lymph is flowing effectively and softening any tissue that may have hardened.

Due to the surgery, lymph nodes may be affected and the lymphatic fluid that would normally flow through them and be filtered by them, now finds itself without a clear pathway to follow. The fluid then leaves the lymphatic vessels and sits in the tissue surrounding that area. The fluid can build up over time, if untreated this build-up leads to swelling. Swelling is one of four stages that’s your body passing through. Phase called inflammatory phase causes excess filtration of fluid into the tissues. During that process, the transport capacity of the lymphatic system becomes overwhelmed and it can’t remove the swelling so effectively. When fluid lingers in the tissues for too long, it affects how the wound heals. Having manual lymphatic drainage, we are giving the lymphatic system a little external help by encouraging the fluid into the lymphatics, so it can continue what it does naturally which speeds up and optimises the healing process.

After surgery, MLD is also recommended to reduce pain, swelling and bruising and to encourage faster healing in the wound area, so that you can get back to your life as quickly and painlessly as possible. It also reduces the risk of complications from surgery, including the formation of scar tissue and fibrosis, an uneven hardening under the skin, and so is recommended by cosmetic surgeons after liposuction, breast augmentation or enlargement (augmentation mammoplasty), breast implant removals, breast lift, buttock lift, abdominoplasty.
